A Program Tailored to Aspiring Professional Program Participants

Would you like to start professional training in contemporary dance? The École de danse contemporaine de Montréal’s preparatory classes will help you prepare for admission auditions by helping you develop your technique and explore your creative potential!

Benefiting from a framework adapted to your needs, you will receive nine hours of training per week, taught by contemporary dance professionals who have made a career of performance, choreography and teaching.

Though it is possible to register for technical classes à la carte, we highly recommend taking all the classes to significantly improve your skills and thus increase your chances of being admitted to the professional training program (DEC in Contemporary Dance Performance, or ACE in Modern Dance).

Admission Criteria

  • Minimum of two years of dance instruction (contemporary, classical, jazz or other)
  • or

  • advanced-level dancers looking for a more regular and rigorous program of study.

In addition to the basic criteria, candidates must be:

  • 15 years or older;
  • in good health;
  • passionate about dance;
  • interested in pursuing a career in dance.

Please note that placement evaluations are held during the first week of each session.

Although these classes are an excellent way to prepare for auditions, they do not guarantee acceptance into the advanced program nor are they a prerequisite for the college diploma (DEC) in dance performance or the attestation (AEC) in modern dance.

Professional training preparation classes consist of two parts: dance techniques and choreography.

Course Description

CONTEMPORARY DANCE TECHNIQUES I & II
These classes address all the aspects of dance training to help dancers develop their technique, as well as the quality and interpretation of movement to bring out their full expressiveness. The course focuses on participants developing a sense of the body as a coordinated, flexible, powerful and versatile instrument. Offered three times a week, the class is accompanied by a pianist or drummer. As a result, music and dance fuse in a more and more sophisticated way.

CHOREOGRAPHIC EXPLORATIONS I & II
These classes are an introduction to the choreographic experience through improvisation, short excerpts from the contemporary repertoire and experimentation with various dance sequences developed by instructors. Students will apply their technical skills, discover new movements, broaden their contemporary dance vocabulary and explore a range of artistic approaches. There will be an informal presentation of this choreographic work at the end of each semester.

Trainers: Marie-Ève Lafontaine and Emmanuelle Bourassa Beaudoin.

FAQ

I took the professional training preparatory program in the fall and would like to register for the winter session. The courses have already begun. Can I still register? You may still take part in the technical classes of the preparatory courses on a per-lesson basis. You can either pay the fee for each lesson you attend or purchase a series of ten coupons for the remainder of the session.

Do you have to take the preparatory courses in the fall session before taking them in the winter or spring session? Not necessarily. You can register at the start of each session.

Is there a warm-up period before the beginning of the technique class? Each dancer warms up individually before the technique class. It is recommended that you arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of time to limber up. Participants registered for the complete program also have access to the training room after 4:00 p.m.
